China Childhood Memories - Hot Cross Buns

When I was five, my parents were sent to help out at the school for missionary children. Since it was war time and sugar was scarce, we had special "treats" only on Sundays. Every Sunday morning, before Church, we would line up, show the bottom of our shoes, and hold up our hanky. If a shoe had a hole in the sole, my dad would patch it with the rubber of an old bicycle tire. Hankies were very expensive in China so we had to take good care of them. If we lost our hanky, we missed out on the Sunday treat.

One Sunday around Easter time, I was at inspection, and suddenly realized I did not have my hanky. Because of this, I did not get my Sunday treat - which was the once-a-year hot cross buns! Any other time it would not have been so bad, but I really missed not getting that treat.

Years later, when I was first married, I told my husband that story. From then on, every Easter, he never fails to buy me hot cross buns!!

One Easter, I was in VA with our daughter for the birth of her first baby. A UPS package came for me ..... it was hot cross buns from my dear hubby.

Since we've now been married almost 49 yrs, I have more than made up for those hot cross buns that I missed as a child in China. What a special hubby I have to spoil me all these years with those wonderful hot cross buns.

Hi Ruthie, thanks for the most beautiful story yet! I've heard of Hot Cross Buns but never in my entire life have seen them or tasted them. They actully have a cross. Thanks! Now I must go on a search to try them. You tell you DH that I said, that's a most thoughtful and loving tradition that he started for you, and that I think he's an amazing husband, and that from the first story that I read about him, I always have. This is one of the sweetest stories I've ever heard. I've never eaten hot cross buns, but I've eaten hot buns, homemade - with butter melted. I don't think there is anything more delicious. Thanks for sharing this story.
