China Childhood Memories - my Dad

My story begins with my father. He grew up in Canada as the youngest of ten children. His mother died when he was just ten years old, and his older sister helped raise him. After she was married, my dad and his father "batched". When he was 21 yrs of age, some young men came to his town holding street meetings (they were allowed in those days). Although his mom had taken him to church as a young child, he now realized he needed to have a personal relationship with the Lord, and he accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour.
He attended Prairie Bible Institute in Canada, where he heard Hudson Taylor's call to missions in China. He went out to China as a single missionary in 1930.
Before he left for China, his sister told him that his mom had prayed that her youngest child (my dad) would become a preacher! Her prayers were answered eleven years after her death!
This is such an example for me! This shows the power of prayer - and of God's loving answer in His time!

Ruthie, Beautiful. Your China stories begin with a prayer answer. How lovely is that. What is "batched?" You know I like the fact that he is going to China as a bachelor. The romantic in me can't wait to see how he met your mom. And by the way, your father was hot! :0)

Robbie, The phrase "batched" is what my dad meant when two batchelors lived together and did the best they could with no woman to take care of the house and cooking. My dad actually cooked a bit - things like scrambled eggs with potatoes and tomatoes in it, and huge plate-sized pancakes that he called "mancakes". I always loved it when he made those for us.

HI Ruthie, That is a great story. It is clear God did answer those prayers all in His timing.

What a wonderful legacy your parents gave you. It is so inspiring to hear stories like this. Thank you for sharing. I've never been to China, but we went to India in 1999 to visit a mission there. What an experience that was.
Ruth was the name of my favorite aunt who was like a second mother to me. We often called her Ruthie. Great name!

How beautiful Ruthie! I read your mom's story first and it's so God to bring to sold out people together in China! Wow! What faith they both had... I'm so looking forward to hearing more of their story and your story :)
